The Threat >>


It’s so easy to fall into the trap of chasing outcomes, it's basically instinctive.

We inherently want to win, take and be recognised.


When this is all we think about we become vulnerable to failure (which is inevitable).


Anything that slows or hinders our progress becomes a problem and frustration is the first emotion to set in.


For many high performers, the desire to deliver eventually becomes so overwhelming that we quickly overwhelm and underperform.

By shifting attention to processes, we can develop a more sustainable, fulfilling approach to achieving goals.

Mastering the “how” ensures that the “what” follows in due course.


Plus, it allows you to enjoy the ride and reap deeper satisfaction from your work and growth.


3 unconventional strategies to prioritise process over outcome:


The Process >>


1. (Don't) Trust The Process


We've heard the advice, “Trust the process” but as I so often do, I do the opposite. Why?


Don't assume anything. Regular question and review your process. How much are you enjoying it? What would make it more impactful? How are others doing it better? What would it look like if it were effortless?


Some questions to reflect on.


2. Celebrate Invisible Wins


Outcomes are visible, but processes often aren’t.


Acknowledge when you stick to a habit, such as respecting work boundaries or completing a Pomodoro sprint on a tough task.


These invisible wins build momentum and reinforce productive behaviours.


3. Create a Reverse To-Do List


At the end of the day, list the things you did well, big or small.


This technique helps you appreciate your effort and commitment to your process, rather than obsessing over unachieved goals.


4. Detach from the Clock


In a culture obsessed with deadlines, take periodic breaks from strict timeframes.


Dedicate one “process day” each month, where you engage in work or training purely for the sake of mastery. No deadlines, just focus and improvement.


The Metrics >>


How do you know you’re progressing? Track metrics that measure your process rather than your results. For example:


Consistency: Did you practice your daily habit for 10 minutes every day this week?

Quality: Did you focus entirely during your client calls without multitasking?

Learning: What one insight did you gain from reviewing last month’s projects?


By making these subtle but powerful shifts, you’ll unlock a richer, more balanced approach to growth, both personally and professionally.
